Artistic Statement

Conversation, all great art sparks conversation and comes from conversation. My favorite parts about directing come from the dialogue between actor and director. I believe for art to affect a community it has to come from community collaboration. Theatre is one of the most powerful forces for change I have experienced and theatre from many diverse perspectives is theatre at its most powerful. This is the type of theatre I like to create with my actors. I only know so much and have only had one life experience. It is important to collaborate with diverse artists to present a mosaic painting of our reality. As a director I love creating pieces that use comedy to critique the world we live in and telling stories through a fantastical lens, as to me these stories are like theatrical sandboxes I can shape and build what is currently there into a beautiful new form. I believe we live in a current plague of self-seriousness. I like to have a certain whimsy to my art that I feel we’re missing currently in the world. In my directing I like implementing movement in ways that transform the space and really pull the audience into my word. I am interested in solving unique theatrical problems, things like flight and magic. With my unique interest and experience in legal studies I like to play around with the difference between ethical, moral, and legal within my work which is one of the most important questions we as people can ask ourselves about any situation. I want to use images in order to activate my audience’s imagination to take them on the journey. Theatre is one of the last places on earth that challenges everyone to use their imagination at this scale, and as a director I want to work to make sure theatre continues to be that place.
